This section 4_c_2, Clair, uses Clair and other Topsides to show other forms of Modularisation which downscales the units of manufacture and
are often referred to as PAU,s, Pre assembled Units or Packages. Clair is a structure into which PAU,s are added prior to becoming a one
piece topside. It is an open frame structure. Although demobilised a good example of the smaller Platform is Statpipe 2/4s. This had an MSF
as a celler deck with conventional modules (2) mounted on it. If we view Elf Froy we see a Platform that clearly had the opportunity to add a
conventional Module. If we look at the extension of Processes on Heidrun we end up with a host of PAU,s none of which are very modular
other than being items in a Process System Train. Obviously one of the factors that affects all of these are the Process they must fulfill both in
termes of process functionality (does it remove salt from sea water) but also space (how big is it, will it fit in) and will the process function in
any locality, can we afford it, so the list of requirements goes on.

a general understanding of Modules 
In 4c-2 we look at other approaches,
Clair and also Statpipe 2/4s, Froy and
Heidrun. Statpipe 2/4s illustrates the
small riser platform, simplistic with not a
lot on it. Froy illustrates the attraction of
room for expansion and M52 a one piece
module. Finally Heidrun illustrates where
space is at a premium, room for
expansion has not really been considored
and Modules are really not a solution.

Clair is an example of modules which are package size and added mainly during construction to the
structure in a sequence floor upon floor, This sequence of pictures shows :- 1) the complete structure
followed by 2) the outline of the Process System for Pigging the Export Line, 3) the initial element of
construction is a pigging module. 4)) shows the Pigging Module being incorporated into the Cellar Deck,
5) the mid deck which when completed is added to the Cellar Deck and finally 6 the Drilling Deck which
caps the Mid Deck. 7) shows the decks mounted one on top of the other. By design other major
packages such as Drilling Derrick and Accomodation may be added later or even Offshore. 8) covers later
additions for well connection.

Heidrun Style Concept, this shows what
happens in cases where systems need to be
added and unlike Froy, space is not available
for a full Module to be added. The example in
questiob concerns a Condeep but shows the
problem for any existing Topsides with no
space for expansion/ The system reqired
concerms Water Injection and and removal of
Sulphates and solids burden, To fit things
slace must be recognised and a Process
which minimises size needs to be selected.
Froy Style Concept, this shows what happens in cases where systems need to be added and previous
designs allow for a full Module to be added/ The MSF has a capability to take the weight and size of the
Module. The Module must be compact enough to fit the space. Many FPSO's now in building are
specific for their first Project with minimum space for the future. This may be OK where this is a one
Project, no future Process changes or modification with a size impact, for Field/FPSO/ Of flexibility is
required then major work may be necessary,
Statpipe Module Style Concept, this shows a different approach to
Clair in that the Jacket has an MSF and Modules are added on top in
layers. This platform is obsolessant but its concept is not. For the
simple platform for pipeline riser interstage pigging, riser hook up for
outreach wells, etc then this basic design may be applicable. What
has gone on since its demise is the design of outreach wells,
directional drilling and subsea development obviating bringing things
to the surface see 3c-3 Other Processes.
